ABOUT THE BALLET

The legendary story of “The Nutcracker” ballet unfolds at a spectacular Christmas feast in 19th-century Germany. The heroine, Clara, receives a unique nutcracker from her godfather, Drosselmeyer. The environment transforms magically when the clock strikes midnight, and Clara is taken into a wonderful realm. In this universe, her beloved nutcracker comes to life and destroys the frightening Mouse King with Clara’s help, changing into a gorgeous prince. They go on an enthralling adventure to the Land of Sweets.

They are met in the Land of Sweets by a lovely cast of characters, including the Sugar Plum Fairy and many confectionery-themed people, each of whom performs elegant dances representing various varieties of sweets. The second act of the ballet is a colourful display of these wonderful performances, culminating in a magnificent finale with the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince. Clara awakens from her dream-like trip, cherishing the lovely recollection of her spectacular Christmas Eve.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Tchaikovsky, one of the most famous Romantic composers, was born on May 7, 1840. His music has left an enduring imprint on classical music. He obtained a formal education in composing at the St. Petersburg Conservatory when he was younger. He was a prolific composer with an uncanny capacity to elicit strong emotions via his music. His most well-known pieces include “Swan Lake,” “The Nutcracker,” and the “1812 Overture.” Tchaikovsky’s works are celebrated for their melodic richness and emotional depth, establishing him as a master of orchestration and a real icon in the world of classical music.

As a closeted homosexual in a culture that was mainly intolerant of such inclinations, Tchaikovsky’s personal life was distinguished by his fight with his own identity and cultural standards of the time. His inner struggle was frequently reflected in his music, adding levels of intricacy to his songs.
