ABOUT THE BALLET

August Bournonville’s ballet Napoli, which celebrates Neapolitan culture and the strength of love. The ballet tells the tale of the passionate Italian girl Teresina and the fisherman Gennaro’s love, set in the vibrant streets of Naples. Exuberant tarantellas and vibrant group dances are part of the spectacular wedding party that marks the triumph of their relationship, which endures hardships and temptations along the way, including a malevolent sea spirit.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Hans Christian Lumbye (1810-1874) was a Danish composer and conductor known for his significant contributions to the genre of Danish light music, particularly the “polka” and the “galop.” Born in Copenhagen, Lumbye gained fame as the “Strauss of the North” due to his lively and charming compositions that delighted audiences in Denmark and beyond. He was the conductor of Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen for several decades, where his music played a central role in creating a festive atmosphere.
