ABOUT THE BALLET

“Birthday Offering” is a one-act ballet choreographed by Frederick Ashton to an Alexander Glazunov composition. It was produced in 1956 to commemorate the Royal Ballet’s 25th anniversary. The ballet is a display of the company’s skills, including solos, duets, and group works that emphasise the dancers’ skill and artistry. Each part of the ballet pays tribute to a different Royal Ballet ballerina, with each dancer expressing a distinct character and style, showing the company’s rich history and variety.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Alexander Glazunov, born in St. Petersburg, Russia on August 10, 1865, was a well-known Russian composer and conductor of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The music of Glazunov is distinguished by lush harmonies, delicate melodies, and a particular Russian Romantic style. His compositions include the ballet “Raymonda” and symphonies such as the well-known “Symphony No. 5.” Glazunov died on March 21, 1936.
