ABOUT THE BALLET

Bournonville choreographed this one-act ballet. launched by the Price family on June 19, 1854, in Copenhagen’s Casino Theatre. In a sequence where the ballerina appears to dance with her reflection in a mirror but is actually dancing in unison with another ballerina, she appears to be dancing in the ballet about a young Spanish woman dreaming of the attractive man she has just met.

Inspired by his idol, Juliette Price of the renowned English circus family, Bournonville composed the ballet for her. For the ballet’s 1856 debut at the Royal Danish Ballet (Royal Theatre, Copenhagen), he made revisions to La Ventana. He added a pas de trois and a seguidilla, which he had taken from Paul Taglioni, for the second staging.
