Kermesse in Bruges is a ballet that portrays a lively and festive scene set in the town of Bruges, Belgium, during a traditional kermesse, or fair. The ballet unfolds with colorful celebrations, lively dances, and captivating interactions among townspeople, celebrating their culture, customs, and the spirit of revelry. Paulli was born in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. He studied under classical composer Frederik Thorkildsen Wexschall and violinist and composer Claus Schall. He went on a research journey to Germany, Austria, Italy, France, and England between 1839 and 1841. In 1849, he was also appointed concertmaster. In 1864, he joined the Royal Danish Orchestra and was appointed conductor, a post he held for 20 years until the end of the 1882-1883 season. He also conducted the orchestra of the Cecilia Association (Caeciliaforeningen) at the same time.

Paulli died in Copenhagen on 23 December 1891.
