Description

ABOUT THE BALLET

Based on Lope de Vega’s Fuenteovejuna, Laurencia is a ballet by Vakhtang Chabukiani to music by Alexander Krein. It was created during a period when “choreodrama” was the only accepted style of modern ballet in the Soviet Union. It is reminiscent of a true drama in which dancing could be both a dramatic device and a means of amusement. Simultaneously, it was evident that the tale of a peasant revolution was the perfect theme for a Soviet ballet.

ABOUT THE COMPOSER

Early 20th-century Russian composer and violinist Alexander Krein (1883–1951) was trailblazing figure in the music world. Krein was pivotal character in the Russian Silver Age of music, which witnessed flourishing of artistic originality. Krein is known for his varied and avant-garde compositions. His compositions frequently incorporated modernist harmonies, Jewish themes, and Russian folk tunes, illustrating the rich cultural diversity of the era. Krein actively participated in the revival of Jewish musical traditions in Russia as member of the Society for Jewish Folk Music and the powerful Belyayev circle.
